Skinny Gene not only provides DPP services, such as nutrition counseling, fitness education, cooking classes, and more to address all aspects of one’s lifestyle that can contribute to type 2 diabetes, but they have also built a program that addresses the challenges around accessibility and enrollment in their program.
After 10 years of championing for diabetes prevention services in San Diego, the Skinny Gene Project is looking at the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes from a different lens. According to the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, Californians could experience a growth of up to 30% in new diabetes cases within the next 5 years. However, an evidence based solution already exists that can prevent diabetes by 58% and up to 70% for those age 60 and older.
