Opportunity to Refresh San Diego

This month, we are doing things a little bit differently.

Our Skinny Gene newsletters, posts, and tweets focus on small changes that you can do that’ll make a big impact on your health. Today, we’re asking you to join us in taking a small action that will have a tremendous impact on our community.

We’re not asking you for money; we’re asking for an OPPORTUNITY.

On September 1st, the Skinny Gene Project will be one of many causes eligible to win a grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project.  With your help, we will have the opportunity to rollout our Skinny Gene Diabetes Prevention and Nutrition Education Program in our hometown of San Diego, California.

We’re asking you to join us and pledge to vote to bring prediabetes nutrition education to San Diego.

For the last two years, we have created national awareness about the importance of preventing diabetes, but we’ve been limited to offering our actual Skinny Gene Diabetes Prevention and Nutrition Education Program to areas like San Antonio, TX, where we were given a facility to use and enough patients to substantiate the need to hire a nutrition team.

Winning the Pepsi Refresh grant would give us the opportunity to finally have the space and dedicated nutrition team to educate the more than 300,000 San Diegans with prediabetes – of which 90% don’t even know they have it. Providing proper screenings and subsequent lifestyle intervention counseling will give these at-risk San Diegans the opportunity to reverse their prediabetes, and give them a 56% chance of preventing type 2 diabetes- for life.

More specifically, the funds from this grant would allow us to impact the San Diego community by allowing our organization to:

  • Hire a community outreach coordinator and nutrition team to bring the message of prevention into high risk neighborhoods;
  • Provide at-risk screenings to identify people with undiagnosed prediabetes;
  • Subsidize the cost of our 12-month program for underserved communities in San Diego that would not be able to afford such services;
  • Provide low cost individualized counseling, group classes, and social support networks for anyone in San Diego that wants the opportunity to prevent diabetes.

Each year 1.6 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, a disease that is 90% preventable yet kills more people than AIDS and breast cancer combined.

Most cities like San Diego have few, if any, diabetes prevention programs designed to help the 57 million American with prediabetes prevent the further development of type 2 diabetes.  Without programs like ours, people with prediabetes will have a greater than 80% chance of developing full-blown diabetes with the next few years.

You have the opportunity to change this! The Pepsi grant will be awarded based on YOUR VOTES!

We’ve successfully implemented the program and helped our patients in San Antonio. Now you have the opportunity to help us to make a big impact on the San Diego community.

We are looking for 600+ people to pledge to vote and bring the Skinny Gene Diabetes Prevention and Nutrition Education Program to San Diego.  If you’re willing to take this pledge, CLICK HERE to join our team or send us an email to healthyhome@jmossfoundation.org (Subject Line : Help Win Grant). We’ll email you information about how and when to vote.

Together we WILL prevent diabetes!
